Well it has been over a week since I last posted... so it must be time to update! Much has happened this week. Among other things I saw and two a half more births this week. Both of which were beautiful little girls. The half was a baby I was just minutes late for, but watched the birth of the placenta... which is also fascinating (and yes, I do find that odd to think that I find placenta's fascinating... but what can you do)! The one little girl was having a hard time at the end of the birth, and her heart rate was really low... so when she finally came out she was all blue. It was really shocking to see... people aren’t supposed to look like that! But in less than a minute, after a good rub, she was turning all pinkish and whimpering a bit... and it was all ok.
That was on Sunday... then on Thursday I had another birth room shift... and another little girl was born... it was a very normal birth, and everything went well. The crazy part of that night was nearing the end of our shift a bunch of women started coming into the clinic, all in active labour and needing attention. It was like an organized mad-house for a few minutes as the new shift came on and my shift got organized to hand things off to them. Let's just say that before Sarah (one of my housemates and a second year students) and I actually left the clinic two more babies had been born! You can read about those crazy births on Jenna's blog... I think it's her Sat. the 30th entry.
High intensity situations like all of these are just that... INTENSE. I am glad that I have been able to experience these times at the clinic while my role there is still very observatory. It is good to know that God gives wisdom at all times and truly does teach us in the minute what to do and say. Looking at one day having a leading role in these situations would definitely frighten me it I had never realized this truth before!
We had our first assignment due this week, and our first test on Friday... and then were given our new assignment right after we finished writing the test! So I guess things are full steam ahead! It is challenging for me to do this sort of scholastic work... independent and thorough... but I know it is good to grow in these areas, and I am trying to enjoy the ride!
Sorry for the lack of birth room shift picks... I need to bring my camera some day. No birth pics though, I promise!
